The tendency of the past has been to defend one's tribe, one's city, one's nation. But in today’s globalized world, we need an all-encompassing solidarity that promotes cohesion and strives for harmony. We are crippled by debt – personal, national and international – and stand on the brink of ethical and financial bankruptcy, which threaten to drag us into increasing conflict and oppression. Effective responses are paralysed by self-interest and a perceived stake, at all levels, in a failing system.
Many thousands of people have worked tirelessly to meet these challenges, achieving great things. But, between us, we have yet to generate the critical mass required for a decisive change of direction. The language of security is often one of power and polarization. To shift to a language of ethics and cooperation, a true dialogue of civilizations, we need to reach across national and regional divides and find common solutions to shared problems. Windows perhaps are open, but now we must pry open the doors.
A worldwide coalition of conscience, based on a transformation of attitudes and relationships at all levels, linking the personal to the global, where:
- Decision-making is guided by a holistic understanding of human security, grounded in relationships of trust that are built among people committed to moral integrity, justice and uplifting the other.
- Decisions are informed by a security paradigm built on five key pillars: just governance, inclusive economics, intercultural dialogue, healing memory, and living sustainably.
- Decision-makers, from the grassroots to the government level, are equipped with tools to develop, foster and sustain conditions of security which liberate individuals and communities to live inclusively and in a search for the common interest.
Robust Analysis. Honest Dialogue. Forgiveness and Healing. Partnership.
- To redirect the narrative of human security, through an architecture that draws on the practical experience of people at all levels working on sustainable solutions to global challenges.
- To create a learning environment focused on answering basic human needs, giving sufficient space for reflection, to address and unblock personal barriers to change, and find insights which can lead in unexpected and inspired directions.
- To build trust by giving attention to historical wounds, which rarely feature in international negotiations but often shape the outcome, and underlining the role of integrity and trustworthiness in finding ways forward.
- To provide a platform for partnership among civil society, multilateral institutions and governments in initiatives for peace and sustainable development.
- To develop concrete tools to address the root causes of human insecurity and catalyse effective action in the field.
